Overview:

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2005 EE Awards!

Enos Mills Lifetime Achievement Award:
This award commemorates the 19th century naturalist in the Estes Park area, Enos Mills, whose vision, photographs and writings were largely responsible for Congress' decision in 1915 to establish Rocky Mountain National Park. Like Enos Mills, both of these award recipients have demonstrated leadership and commitment to the field of EE, innovation, perseverance, and are an inspiration to their colleagues and the community.

  • Dave Sutherland, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks
  • Wendy MacPhail-Brigham, Aspen Elementary and ACES

This Month's Topic:
Got CEEMP?

My dad always ordered his favorite sundae at our local Tastee Freez ~ a CMP (ice cream with lots of chocolate syrup, marshmallow, and peanuts).  They were incredibly gooey, and melty, but had a good crunch, definitely a little bit of everything in every bite.  Every time I hear, CEEMP, I think CMP!  I know our new CEEMP (Colorado Environmental Education Master Plan) isn’t as delicious as a CMP, but it does set the vision for a time when EE is fully embraced, supported and integrated into every-day experiences.  And that is just plain exciting to think about.

I know it is only October (is it October already?), but I imagine that many of you are starting to reflect on your 2005 accomplishments and beginning to build your organization’s plans for 2006.  This is the perfect time to take a look at the revised Colorado Environmental Education Master Plan.  You can access it at http://www.caee.org under EE Master Plan.

You’ve got to check out the plan - after you’ve seen the goals and the vision for EE, we know you’ll find your place.  It is easy to read the words the committee so carefully crafted, but the real power of the master plan comes from these words in action.  So after you check it out, be a part of it!  The idea is that in addition to the goals we aim for individually - within our professional or volunteer work, and for our respective organizations etc. - that we might also aim for accomplishments as a community. Through an integrated, systemic approach to EE, together we can realize the vision of environmental literacy.  Join us! There is place for everyone to contribute.

Here's how you can help:
Read through the plan. Talk about it with others. Keep it nearby.
Find ideas that match your interests, needs, beliefs, etc.
Decide that you will help our community accomplish this task.
Do something - and let everyone know about it.  (CAEE has built a cool online tool to help track accomplishments
Build momentum by using the online system to find others to help you and to tell us what you are already doing or want to do.
Inspire others to follow your lead.
Celebrate!

Even if you start small, your impact will create positive change for EE in Colorado.

Are you already contributing to goals of the CEEMP? Will you use the CEEMP in your work? Please let us know what you are currently doing and/or planning that helps reach the goals of the master plan. GET STARTED in the interactive portion of this site where you can add your accomplishments or planned contributions toward the goals and sub-goals in the Master Plan.
