This Month's Topic:
A
Closer Look at the Alliance
Back
to Top
|
It’s that time of year to reflect on where
we’ve been and where we’re headed. The Alliance has come a long way in the almost
20 years since the very first CAEE planning meetings, and as Hunter Lovins referred to in her keynote speech at the banquet
in November - our time has come. Our online survey this summer
certainly showed that CAEE is doing many things right, and it also told us
that we’ve got a lot of work still to do. In that survey
respondents were asked, “In your own words, describe the Colorado
Alliance for Environmental Education” and words like networking,
training, peer support, coordination, and quality were repeatedly used.
The survey also revealed that we need to figure out a way to better
communicate about some of CAEE’s programs and
services. As an example, respondents were asked to describe in their
own words each of several CAEE services. Over 250 responses for each program/service
were received, and nearly two-thirds did not know about the Resource Review,
the Master Plan, and the Teacher Liaison Network. We’ve got a lot to
offer, and so you will start to hear more about what these programs offer to
you specifically and how you can use them to further advance your own
organization, as well as, environmental education as a profession.
There were some common questions that were asked as a result of the survey,
and so I will use this column as a little guide to sort out the confusion.
I want to stress that if you have any questions or comments - please give me
a call (303-273-9527) or send me an email (director@caee.org).
I’m happy to help. Also, please do check out CAEE’s
new website (www.caee.org), you can use
the top right search bar to find all sorts of information.
What’s the difference between the
listserv and the newsletter, and how do I get CAEE to send out my
announcement? This email you are reading right now is CAEE’s electronic version of the EE InfoLink newsletter. It contains CAEE specific
announcements, as well as, announcements about different events, programs,
and happenings in EE throughout Colorado
and nationally. If you would like us to include an announcement in the
newsletter, send it by the 10th of the month to info@caee.org. The newsletter email
will have [ee-infolink] in the subject line and is
only sent one time per month to CAEE members (about 650). This newsletter is
different from the environmental-ed listserv.
If you receive emails with [environmental-ed] in
the subject line, you are subscribed to the listserv. The listserv is
open to any and all - to subscribe send an email to environmental-ed-subscribe@caee.org.
These emails come often (typically daily) and are a quick way for CAEE to
send out timely announcements and other items of interest. For example,
any announcements about position openings are immediately sent out through
the listserv. At any one given time there are about 200 people
subscribed to the listserv. Send your announcement to info@caee.org, and we will send it out as
appropriate. As members, you will also receive CAEE specific emails about
upcoming events and programs that don’t fall within the newsletter
timeframe.
What’s the difference between
certification and resource review, and why do we need them?
CAEE developed the resource review process as a way for you to have your
program or material reviewed by three peers against the Guidelines for
Excellence in Environmental Education. The purpose is to assess the
quality of your programs and materials and give you valuable feedback that
you can use to prove or improve the quality of your resource. Resource
review is about written materials. But even the best materials can go
bad without the right environmental educator; which is where certification comes
in. Certification is CAEE’s newest
quality initiative (just started this fall – join us!) and is being
designed to develop common understanding about the knowledge and skills
needed to provide high quality
environmental education. Certification is connected to a person, and
reviews are connected to the program. Both focus on encouraging quality
and professional growth. Both are intended to be inclusive, inviting, and
worthwhile. If you feel as I do, that EE needs far greater support to
achieve our potential, if you feel you could use more support from your
supervisor, from your organization, from your legislator, and your funders… then you need to get involved in resource
review and certification. Defining our profession with high standards
will help build support and respect for the field, and break misperceptions.
Master Plan Connection:
Be a part of the Colorado EE
Master Plan! These initiatives are supported by the Colorado
Environmental Education Master Plan, Goal I Collaboration, Goal II Professional
Development, Goal III Promotion, and Goal VII Systemic EE. Check it out
