This Month's Topic:

Time to Prove It

Whether you work in a government agency, apply for grants or other funding, or work in the private sector; we are increasingly being asked to ‘prove it’ about our programs.  Assessment and evaluation are a must these days and sometimes it seems like a whole other world to me, at least a whole other language.  Logic models, outcomes, outputs, objectives – and we thought environmental education had jargon!  Recently I found out about a new tool – just for environmental education and evaluation.  It is a web-based system called MEERA – My Environmental Education Evaluation Resource Assistant.  From the MEERA website (http://meera.snre.umich.edu), “MEERA was created to help educators … by walking them through the steps of conducting a meaningful and useful EE evaluation, providing targeted information, and creating a forum for discussion. The results of a good evaluation can provide the information needed to get more bang for the EE buck – and the evidence donors want to invest in programs.”

MEERA is still being developed, but there are great resources already available - how-to guides, general evaluation resources, and information on EE evaluation courses.  What I like about MEERA is that they have combed through lots and lots of the evaluation resources out there – and provided links to the best ones for environmental education.  Environmental education is a unique animal, and MEERA has taken a lot of the work out of finding the right tools for assessment and evaluation.

For the environmental education profession to get the support it needs, we need to demonstrate our value (I guess instead of “just do it”, we’re moving to “just prove it”).  That is just one of the reasons that QUALITY is CAEE’s drumbeat these days (quality…quality… quality!), and we’re here to help you.  We’ve held several professional development sessions focused on assessment and evaluation over the years, and we are co-hosting another on March 2 with the Denver Zoo.  There are resources like MEERA and the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, and other quality tools from CAEE.  Take the time for a peer review of your programs or materials; you’ll get great feedback from your colleagues on what’s great, and ideas to help you make it even better.  Or get involved in the certification committee - we’re in the process of developing a certification process for environmental educators.  You are providing high quality environmental education, and the reality today is that you need to take the time to prove it

You’ll find links to MEERA, the National Project for Excellence in Environmental, and all of CAEE’s quality programming at http://www.caee.org/quality .
