Coming in March: Project Learning Tree: Early Childhood Experiences.

Since 1993, Project Learning Tree’s PreK–8 Environmental Education Activity Guide has featured more than 35 activities designed for use with PreK and Kindergarten children. In 2003, Minnesota and Wisconsin PLT programs added a variety of experiences for the young learner to some of these activities and created early childhood supplements. This new Project Learning Tree: Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood guide builds on the success of these supplements.

Project Learning Tree’s Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood guide has been developed for children ages three to six. Early childhood spans a wide range of ages and abilities. Educators are encouraged to follow developmentally appropriate practices as they adapt the experiences in this guide to meet the needs of the children they teach.

Because exploring nature is a complete sensory experience, early experiences with the natural world excite children’s imaginations and foster their inborn sense of wonder and curiosity, important motivators for lifelong learning. The introduction of environmental education at the early childhood level reaches children at a key developmental period in their lives and has the potential for influencing lifelong attitudes, values, and patterns of behavior toward the natural world.

Project Learning Tree: Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood integrates nature-based exploration, art, literature, math, music and movement, and outdoor play into early childhood education programs. It allows children to explore, discover, and communicate in expressive ways.
