Becoming a Certified Environmental Educator
What makes a quality environmental educator?
In 2005, a diverse committee worked to develop the Guidelines for Environmental Educators in Colorado to answer that question.
This foundation helped us build an active certification process that sets specific standards of knowledge, skills, and experience that highly qualified environmental educators should be able to demonstrate.
A Certification Program will:
- Encourage quality environmental education and professional growth
- Build support and respect for the field
- Break down misconceptions about environmental education
- Meet the needs of a diverse field

Getting Started
A diverse committee has developed a draft plan, and we're launching a pilot to test the process. One thing is for sure – a successful program will be developed through a consensus approach, by the leaders in Colorado’s EE community.
You can be a part of the process:
Who can be certified?
You! Whether you are new to the field or have years of experience the certification program can help you grow as an environmental educator. We offer two levels of certification and the portfolio requirement allows you to submit work that is relevant to you! Click here to find out more information about levels of certification.
How do I get certified?
Certification for environmental educators is brand new! Colorado is one of only a handful of states that have developed a certification process. If you are interested in helping launch the new Certification of Environmental Educators Program and becoming one of the first Certified Environmental Educators in the State of Colorado, check out the Pilot Certification Program. Nominate an Honorary Exemplary Master Environmental Educator
To address the need for reviewers to certify the first environmental educators (i.e., a reviewer qualification is certification, but they can not be certified unless there are reviewers), a nomination process has been developed to find and honor exemplary master environmental educators from throughout the state. Please use the nomination form below to nominate a colleague you feel meets the qualifications of an honorary exemplary master environmental educator. The committee will review the nominations, and accepted nominees will be named “Honorary Exemplary Master Environmental Educators” and will be asked to become peer reviewers in the process. These honorary members of the review panel will not be asked to submit a portfolio, but will be required to attend the reviewer training prior to reviewing applications.
