2017 Outstanding Environmental Educator Award - Allison Plute

Allison Plute

Colorado Springs Utilities

Allison's leadership, enthusiasm and ability to engage our community has led to the largest water clean-up effort in the state of Colorado. In its fourth year, Creek Week engaged over 2,500 participants, 9 communities, and removed over 10 tons of litter from our parks, trails, open spaces and waterways. Not only has Allison organized collaborative efforts for a watershed-wide, yearly clean-up, but she also initiated the state’s first Brewshed® Alliance to engage citizens in conversations and actions that will lead to water protection and enhancement by highlighting beer’s number one ingredient: water. Nine local breweries in Colorado Springs signed on as founding members of the Fountain Creek Brewshed® Alliance. She was a core member of the planning committee to bring Colorado Springs their first Pikes Peak Children’s Water Festival in 2017. This event enabled more than 500 fourth grade students from school District 11 to attend and engage in a hands-on learning experience, which included collaborative efforts from thirteen local organizations. She is an active board member for The Greenway Fund, a non-profit that advocates for clean water, connecting the community to our waterways and protecting valuable environmental assets. In this role, Allison created a communication collaborative subcommittee to expand the reach of all partners to our community. Her abilities to form connections and provide educational outreach to community members of all ages shows through her many initiatives, campaigns, and events.

CAEE works to ensure everyone in Colorado has an opportunity to learn about the environment where they live. We value inclusiveness and welcome everyone to the field of environmental education.
