2017 Innovative Environmental Education Program Award - On the Wing

On the Wing

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies seeks to conserve birds and their habitat through integrated science, land stewardship and education. The capstone experience of our education program is a ten-day, residential summer camp for teens called On the Wing.

On the Wing give teens the opportunity to design and conduct their own field investigations related to ornithology. Based near Rocky Mountain National Park, On the Wing draws high school students from across Colorado and across the United States who are excited about having an immersive, place-based, and inquiry-driven camp experience. Campers work in small groups, mentored by our veteran educators, to carry out the entire scientific process: on day one, campers develop their own questions and hypotheses, and on day ten, they present their formal papers to an audience of family, friends, and natural resource professionals. The days in between are spent collecting and analyzing data, hiking in the National Park, and working with a variety of professional scientists and land managers.

On the Wing empowers teens to be the leaders of their own education and experience, and provides a unique opportunity to experience scientific research outside of a classroom or lab setting. Our innovative approach allows participants to develop not only technical scientific skills, but also strengths them as leaders, communicators, and advocates for wild places.

CAEE works to ensure everyone in Colorado has an opportunity to learn about the environment where they live. We value inclusiveness and welcome everyone to the field of environmental education.
