2017 Outstanding Youth Environmental Leadership Award

Yesica Chavez

Environmental Learning for Kids

As a sophomore in college, Yesica Chavez has forged her own path in the outdoor world. Three years ago as a high school student, Yesica waded into unfamiliar water when she started a summer job as an Urban Ranger through Environmental Learning for Kids, teaching urban youth in Denver how to fish and recreate outdoors. Though she didn't have the outdoor experience herself, Yesica took on this challenge and has since impacted hundreds of young people through her work in environmental education and advocacy. During the summer of 2017, Yesica became the College Lead Urban Ranger, responsible for creating new and innovative ways to deliver programming centered around fishing, wildlife, outdoor recreation, and our public lands. Having been an Urban Ranger for two summers prior, she fully embraced her new leadership role as College Lead Urban Ranger, and helped effectively lead a summer staff of 11 Urban Rangers in teaching over 1,000 youth how to fish. Yesica Chavez has seen how transformational the outdoors can be, and is driven to create a more inclusive atmosphere for all people in the outdoors, especially those traditionally overlooked. Yesica was recently appointed as the Youth Ambassador for the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, under the leadership of Director Luis Benitez. In this position, Yesica is tasked with attending and speaking at various outdoor industry conferences while bringing a young and diverse voice into the conversation of the outdoor recreation in Colorado.

CAEE works to ensure everyone in Colorado has an opportunity to learn about the environment where they live. We value inclusiveness and welcome everyone to the field of environmental education.
