THREE-DIMENSIONAL LEARNING IN EE

September 27, 2019
9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Avon

Co-Hosted by Walking Mountains Science Center

Join environmental education (EE) providers and supporters from agencies, nonprofits, schools, and environmental, nature, and conservation fields to network, share ideas, and find inspiration from innovative EE leaders.

Colorado has incorporated the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into Colorado's new academic standards and environmental education is a perfect way to engage learners in mastering the standards. These standards were built upon new research about how students learn and focus on three major dimensions: (1) Scientific and engineering practices; (2) Cross-cutting concepts; and (3) Disciplinary core ideas. Similar research in EE has shown that instruction is most successful when it is learner-centered, engages participants in discourse and collaboration, inspires wonder and curiosity, makes instruction relevant, and provides opportunity for direct interaction with nature.  If you work with K-12 learners, in formal or nonformal education, its critical to understand this 3 dimensional learning model.

At the 2019 West Slope Conference, we will explore ways of designing and sequencing activities that are effective for how we know students learn best. Learn more about the 3D vision of NGSS, the connections between NGSS and the new Colorado State Academic Standards set to be implemented in 2020, and how to teach based on these standards using successful models such as the BEETLES (Better Environmental Education, Teaching, Learning & Expertise Sharing) Project.
